Ancient Egyptian river boat. Artwork of an Egyptian river boat, from the Ptolemaic period (3rd to 1st centuries BC), on the River Nile. This boat did not have a keel, and was moved using a sail and oars. The Nile was one of the main transport routes in Ancient Egypt, and boats like this were used extensively to ferry food, goods, people and building materials.
