Changes and Expectations

Pharast 07 It was a mere week since Founder’s Day, and Ayrn Mordan Valyar, Sovereign Monarch, King of Thylica returned to Stagfell, triumphant in victory over the forest dragon which had taken up residence, along with its plundered treasure. He knew a speech would be needed to help calm the population. The Lizardfolk most effected were far easier to calm the humans that were the bulk of Stagfell’s population. Lizardfolk have a simpler outlook on life, death, and security. Their biggest disappointment was not getting to feast upon the dragon immediately. However, they were happy to know the meat would be preserved, and once Miki had the hide intact, they would have their feast to honor their dead.

Aryn had talked with Vern, and the Duke of Varnhold was willing to take over the duties of Magister for the Kingdom. Oleg Leveton had long expressed interest in setting aside the day to day operations of the treasury as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Now, if Barry Morgan was willing to change roles, he could take on that role, Vern would step into his duties, and Oleg could at last retire back to his trading post cum trading settlement.

Baroness Svetlana Leveton too had come to want a rest after 6 years of service as first Counselor then as Prime Minster of Parliament. Gone were they early days when she could know so many of the citizens directly. She missed the intimacy of the old days and was less excited by the needs of running Parliament. Most importantly, as she is nearing 30, she is ready to start a family. She had already approached Angela Thornberry about serving. Countess Thornberry was as new to nobility as the Levetons, but older. She came as a new widow as one of the early settlers 6 years ago, and build a thriving business on wine, brewing and distillation. Her sons mostly run the business, and Angela is a good candidate as she, too, comes from common stock.

All of this meant Ayrn had to schedule several meetings to set the changes in motion, as well as act to calm the population. A speech would be a good start. And more building was always good. Something about expansion and construction seemed to make the people feel good about the future, especially city walls.

It has already been a full day. The King had meet with all the parties and would be ready to make some announcements. Angela and Svetlana assured Ayrn they had the votes for Angela, and Svetlana would be making her announcement to Parliament later today. They will then take a vote and Ayrn would have the opportunity to address Parliament and give his speech.

His meetings with Oleg and Barry went well, and the speech would be an opportunity to address these changes in ministers. That aside, a rousing speech about the expansion of Varnhold and Rezbin, the establishment of a new tower to permanently subdue Candlemere Island. He was working on the speech for the afternoon when Fyonia and Miki came into his office unannounced.

“Ayrn,” his wife started, “I have been feeling weak the past two weeks so I talked to Miki. She says I am pregnant.”

Ayrn’s eyes widened and a huge smile broke across his face. He glanced down at Miki who was grinning broadly and then leapt up to embrace Fyonia.

“I never thought this soon! Miki are you sure?” he exclaimed.

The Gnome nodded and laughed. “Totally! You always do things ahead of schedule, Ayrn, so why should this be any different? Anyway, she is about 10 weeks in. You elves don’t have regular cycles like humans, so these elvish pregnancies always seem to be a surprise. I am looking forward following it.”

“Are you feeling OK? What do you need?” Ayrn was now no longer King, but a concerned husband.

Fyonia laughed, “Nene is taking care of me. I feel fine, just weak. I have to have energy for two.”

“So, “ the mischievous Miki’s eyes danced with laughter, “Does this change your speech, Sire? Six years is a long time with no heir on the way for humans.”

Ayrn’s own eyes were shining with blinked back tears, and he smiled crookedly, ”Yes, Miki, I believe it does.”

Ayrn’s Speech to Parliament, Joint Session

I want to open with honoring the six years of service of Baroness Leveton. She has served first as Councilor, then as the first Prime Minister of Parliament. Always, she has brought to me the concerns of Our subjects and guided me in addressing those concerns. You have all been able to get to know her, and value her dedication and service. In honor of and thanks for her service, We will be building for her and her husband a home fitting their stature.

Earlier today, I accepted your election of Countess Thornberry to Prime Minster. She is a testimony to what Thylicia stands for. Coming from common stock, difficult times, the loss of her husband, and along with her children, the Countess rose to be an early producer Today, Thornberry wine, beer, and spirits are one of our most popular exports. I know she will serve the Kingdom well.

As the Baroness is stepping down to focus on family, so will her husband. Our faithful Chancellor of the Exchequer will also retire to Leveton to continue running his Trading Post. Magister Barry Stroud has agreed to fill that role, and our own Duke Varnhold will be taking over the duties of Magister. We understand he already has plans for our University.

To the East, We will expand the protection of Nomlynn to include the resources of Lake Silverstep, making that County into an Earldom.

Now, events compel a discussion of the state of the Kingdom. We are happy to announce that the small army advancing on Rezbin was easily defeated. General Grunduar led the fight in a rout that left 9 out of 10 attackers dead.

We killed a great dragon in the woods. Its head will soon address the Throne room as a warning to others about attacking Our Kingdom. The buildings it destroyed will be rebuilt. The families of those it killed have not only our sympathy and prayers, but their families will receive compensation to be decided by this body, from the treasury.

The Island of Candlemere has been purified. To make sure it will never again be a threat to the people of Thylicia, the site is being razed and new construction will cover the old, as overseen by General Grunduar and Duke Candlemere.

If there are new threats on the horizon, we will meet them. Threats from west or east are not going to destroy our sense of security. In defiance, We will expand Varnhold and Rezbin. We will not allow others to dictate the size of our cities.

We have known since we started, that our Kingdom home was a statement against disorder and chaos. Thylicia stands for ordinary people, like Angela Thornberry having a chance to live their lives in peace. There are powers in Golarian and beyond who do not want this freedom for anyone. It is rare and precious. We will guard that freedom, together.

Before I let you go, I have some personal news. Queen Fyonia and I have been blessed with the news that she is expecting. I know that for the humans, 5 years has been a long time since marriage to go without a pregnancy, however, this is sudden and unexpected for elves. We are delighted and full of joy. Thank you. My the gods continued to bless Thylicia.
