Description

Baylena III is a standard garden world settled 7303 years ago by settlers looking to explore aquatic xenomorphs free of the sanctions of the Home worlds. The world was heavily terraformed while most of the colonists remained in stasis. While the original colonists were human and smaller cetaceans, the crew were gengurnic specialists as well as experts in planetary engineering. Not only was the world changed, but new forms of sapient cetaceans and cephalopods. All three moons were moved into orbit, one to be the space end of a spacebridge anchored on the sea floor.

Planetary Infrastructure

Baylena III has three space rings, with connections to various Islands as well as the I Kēia Manawa Nui space bridge. The space bridge itself uses active support and antigravity to allow great rivers of water to flow up and down, and has leads to all three space rings to form the Kikowaena Kai. The I Kēia Manawa Nui sinks into an extinct volcano in the center of a large island, where the land portion of the space port is located. Great tunnels and channels link the crater to the sea.

All the industry on Baylena is underwater, on the sea floor. Agriculture is from great floating vertical farms with artificial lights. These are mostly tended by synthetics and aquatics. Great schools of fish are herded by genetically enginnered fish. Sea predators are designed to leave all sapient forms alone.

Most of the structures on land are simple structures, fashioned from living plants. These are fast to grow into their simple forms. Organic recyclers deal with waste. The humans tend to live the apparent lives of hunter-gatherers, fishing and farming on floating mats. However, the whole world is fully part of a mindscape and sophisticated technological centers drift on the surface of the world’s oceans.

Every structure has water/land interfaces and access, and there is a easy flow between regions.

Populations

The Humans tend to live simple lives on the surface island. They are all of pacific islander stock and speak a mélange of those old languages as their native speech. They also speak the click language of the aquatic xenomorphs.

The xenomorphs come in many forms. Most of the cetaceans never come out on to dry land, though when they do, it is usually wearing gravity harnesses, to allow them to fly through the air like swimming. The cephalopods (both shelled and unshelled) are more likely to work in the air, though they too use gravity harnesses. All cetaceans have some cybernetics to allow manipulation limbs and to process O2 from the water. Often, both sets will use drones for work around them as seamlessly as we use hands, keeping extra limbs out of the way for speed. Cephalopods all have cybernetics to breath in the air.

Culture

The culture of Baylena is unified and laid back. The world is peaceful, and the culture does not want significant change. When there are eruptions, they are detected and populations shift. Annual hurricanes are avoided not stopped. There is no interest in significant life extension, and even synthetics tend to end their lives after a century. The people of Baylena are not interested in the intensity of the inner worlds, and have shown a significant level of will in maintaining their “hang lose” and “live and let live” mentalities.
