“You notice you are still alive, yes?”

The groan of pain was my only answer.

“Do you see this?” I held up a cheap burner comm unit. On the screen showed 2 pre-saved contact numbers. Blinking through the pain of a fresh bullet wound, Jun-Woo Tae tried to focus on the phone I dangled in front of his face.

“I have two calls I can make. One-I let Mr. Ang know the job is done and you and the rest of your family are dead. I know your wife and daughter are in the safe room downstairs. If I have to rip your left eye from your corpse to activate the door you know I will. I also know she probably has a shotgun leveled at the door so I would toss in this incendiary grenade as the door opens. White phosphorus is an incredibly painful way to go. Ah, by that look you wonder how I know this. Your second-in-command sold Mr Ang that information, but don’t worry I took care of him on my way in.”

“You son of a bitch I’ll..AAAGGHH!”

Lifting my foot off his wounded shoulder, I held up the phone again.

“Pay attention, cyka blyat! I’m only going to offer this once. Now where was I? Yes, first number-boom, you all die. Very sad. Or I call the second number. Then several friends of mine will come up and encourage you and your family to become their friends as well. I can say they are very interested in your political blackmail trove. Interested enough they promise to make it look like you all die here and give you new identities somewhere else. Either way, the Ang Bin Hoay gang now rules this territory.”

Throughout the exchange, the barrel of my gun never left it’s place-pointing at his right eye. He glanced between the phone and the gun. I could almost hear the gears turning in his head, weighing his options. He’d already glanced around the room, trying to find an escape or a way to fight back. I was careful to drag him to the center of the room before I started the pitch precisely to avoid that. It didn’t take him long to figure this out as I saw his body slump in acceptance. 

“Fine, Let me talk to these people.”

“Zayebis! Good, good.”

A quick call and the retrieval team swarmed the compound. I’ve heard the dealmaking many times before and I wasn’t interested in listening in anymore. My current spook brought his own security so I wasn’t needed anyway. I wandered over to the wet bar and perused his stock.

His vodka was good. Perhaps too good really. High priced booze alway seems to miss that little bit of something that shows a person actually put effort into making it. I actually miss kitchen made kvass now. 

The deal had been made as I saw the team hustle the family out into the waiting delivery van. I tell myself the duffle bag full of noble dirt is surely worth all this effort. They came back carrying in some cadaver doubles and positioned them in all the right places. Don’t think about where they got the corpse of a 12yr old girl. Something else for future me to not deal with properly. They quickly removed traces of their presence and poured out some accelerant over the bodies and the rooms. The security lead gave me a thumbs up while my current handler brushed by without even a glance. Smug bastard probably deserves a visit from me more than these people.

I watched the rear lights of the two vans drive off into the night before I tossed the grenade behind me. My car was a block away, but I didn’t need to rush as the local emergency response would be delayed enough for the fire to do its work. I called Mr. Ang and let him know that his star was now as bright as the fire behind me. 

At least for now.
