By the time pirates sought to ambush Rutgers scout ship, now he was training new scouts. It was unfortunate for the pirates that Rutgers was aboard. He was easily able to run several systems at once and turn the table on the pirates, including one Lan Vasquez. Lan was disaffected with his first term in the Scout Service and decided to go pirate. He was fortunate to be picked after being shoved out the airlock by Rutgers. Lan actually feels gratitude towards Rurgers for this, and is not harshly inclined.
